Find and Enjoy Local AM/FM Radio Online More Easily with RadioTime
Turning the Internet into a Radio Tuner for Local Broadcasts from Anywhere in the World
DALLAS – December 10, 2007 – RadioTime (www.radiotime.com) today announced a new Local Radio feature that automatically detects a listener’s location and displays all local AM/FM radio stations and programs. This Local Radio search engine makes it easy for people to browse and listen to local programming on their PCs or streamed to wireless Internet radio devices such as Logitech’s Squeezebox.
RadioTime’s technology provides listeners with the ability to search for and listen to 70,000 local and syndicated shows airing on 50,000 radio stations across the United States and around the world. The new Local Radio function means desktop and device users no longer need to browse through dozens of Web sites to get to their favorite local shows online. Like a GPS map, Local Radio immediately generates a list of AM/FM radio available for their zip code or from thousands of international local radio markets. When a listener searches for a syndicated program, Local Radio automatically tunes to the appropriate local affiliate, if available. This means the listener will hear local news and information updates, improving the advertising value for local broadcasters.
“The average American listens to radio for more than 20 hours each week, much of it tuned to favorite local DJs,” said Bill Moore, CEO, RadioTime. “Live local content is one of radio’s best features, and the Local Radio functionality we launched today makes finding AM/FM radio online faster than pressing seek on a traditional radio tuner.”
Research conducted by Arbitron and Edison Media Research finds that despite the increasing competition for listeners’ ears from online radio, satellite radio and audio podcasts, people are not turning away from AM/FM radio. The majority of people who use radio’s new digital platforms say they expect to continue listening to AM/FM radio as much as they do now despite increasing advancements in technology. “Some industry insiders assume that people who use new digital platforms listen less to AM/FM radio, and they may be surprised to learn from our research that’s not the case,” said Joe Lenski, Executive Vice President, Edison Media Research. “Among respondents in our February 2007 study, the average time spent listening per day to AM/FM radio was 2 hours, 37 minutes compared with 2 hours, 45 minutes among those who use radio’s newer digital platforms of online radio, satellite radio and podcasting. Despite the growth reported in these alternatives, the time spent listening to AM/FM radio by users of digital radio platforms remained essentially unchanged compared to the previous year.”
“The Internet is radio’s new airwaves, and RadioTime is the listener’s new tuner,” said Moore. “RadioTime helps radio stations gain traction online and maintain the loyalty of their listeners as they increasingly turn to the Internet for music and talk radio.”
